The group studies various topics in theoretical physics such as classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, relativity, statistical mechanics and non-linear dynamics.

We typically choose a topic where there is a university undergraduate course of lectures or equivalent available on YouTube. We watch one or two of the lectures over a couple of weeks in our own time and tackle a few related problems. We then meet, usually fortnightly on a Thursday morning, to review and discuss. In the group we have the expert support of Alan McKane, a professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Manchester, who helps guide us through the material and the problems.

To enjoy the courses you will need a certain amount of mathematics, say to A-level standard, but if you are a bit rusty that’s okay.
