Would you like to:

  • Listen to great music and share your favourites with others?
  • Discover talented musicians and vocalists from around the world?
  • Understand more about key artists and styles of music that have influenced jazz since the early 1900s right up to present day?
  • Explore themes such as changing styles in roots music, how technology has changed jazz, how has music for film and theatre developed?

Jazz is a musical genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues, ragtime, European harmony, African rhythmic rituals, spirituals, hymns, marches, vaudeville song, and dance music. And that’s just the start of the story! Throughout the last century (and a bit) diverse musical genres and traditions have combined to bring out something new in jazz every few years…

  • ’Roots’ is a term which generally refers to country and blues music which both developed around the start of the 20th century in America.
  • ‘World’ music includes folk and musical genres from around the world. These traditions go way back before recordings became available so we’ll select songs and instrumentals  from 1960s onwards.

You need no prior knowledge of jazz or world music to attend. If you do have knowledge  of any of these styles of music, or favourite artists, that will be very welcome too!

You don’t need to bring anything except the fee with you. Group members will be invited to propose some songs/music to be played at ‘member’s choice’ sessions from time to time. A list of the music covered will be circulated after each session so you can follow up any featured artists at your leisure.
