Welcome to the new website

Welcome to our new website. We hope that you find it more interesting and easier to read. Although the current content is similar to the old website the potential for the use of photographs and articles is far greater. The key to that is for you to send in photos and articles telling the story of what you have been doing in your group. To send in email attachments use this email address u3aguernsey.news@gmail.com

Boys' Breakfast

The Boys' Breakfast this month will be on Thursday 15th January at Saumarez Tea rooms at the normal time of 9.30am. Just turn up for a lovely breakfast and catch up.

Just before Christmas, some of the u3a Pickle Ball group spent a pleasant couple of hours at Le Pommier Hotel eating a very lovely breakfast/brunch.

Sessions for 2026 start again on Wednesday 7th January.

Patiently waiting!

Still waiting!

U3a Guernsey Padel Club Memorial Trophy

On Thursday 16th October twenty - four players from our Padel Club took part in a tournament held in memory of those Padel Club members that have passed during the year. Players were split into two groups and each player accumulated points over three 15 minute rounds. The top 4 from each group going through to round 4 to decide the winner. Padel is a doubles game and partners were picked randomly to ensure no partnership of the strongest players dominated the tournament. Enjoying the game and camaraderie of the group is the foundation of the Club, having said that every tournament has a winner and in 2025 that was Elizabeth Nye.

Elizabeth edged out Paul Jarrald and Karen Higgs to joint second place by one point. At the end of the tournament the players had a one -minute silent vigil in memory of club members and great friends, Paul Falla and David Ford, who sadly passed away this year.

Travel Group

The travel club have done two holidays this year, one to Gran Canaria in January, which was attended by 5 members and one to Porto in June for 13 travellers.

There are no further plans for this year but hope to run another trip in early 2026.

From the Travel Groups recent trip to Porto

As part of the u3a Showcase Event at Kings, the Wine Discovery Group had a stand and as well as offering a small taster of white, red or rose to anyone visiting us, we also had a fun competition to guess which one of three wine related statements was "true" to be able to be entered into a draw to win a bottle of one of the wines - I know a few of our Wine Discovery Group members entered as well as a lot of other u3a members and those looking to join the u3a or finding out more.

Mark did not make it easy as the two false statements sounded entirely plausible, whereas the true statement sounded ridiculous! But we did have some correct answers to draw from and had three lucky winners - Nick, Wendy and Linda all prospective members of the u3a ( Nick sounded like he knew a bit about wine!)

So, for anyone who entered - Rioja is not a grape variety, so that statement was incorrect. Rose wine is not made by mixing red and white wines together, BUT Chateauneuf du Papa do really have legislation in place which forbids flying Saucers landing in its vineyards! The reason for this was likely a stunt to get publicity for their wines but it must have worked as it was widely reported in the Press at the time - and a bottle of Chateauneuf du Papa at the Co Op St Martins has a flying saucer on the label - which will now make more sense if you spot it!

Thank you to all of you who took the time to stop and chat to nick, Alison and me - possibly the glass of wine persuaded a few of you to linger at our stand!

1,000 Members Commemorative Bench Seat

The Woodworking Group have completed work on our commemorative bench to celebrate our organisation reaching 1000 members.

EVENTBRITE

Now that we have 1,000 members, booking events has become a huge task to undertake manually using sheets of paper & pen, and handling cash & cheques and credit card payments, etc, especially as most people now want to pay by credit/debit card. Having researched various options for an on-line booking system, we have chosen to use Eventbrite, which is used extensively by many organisations for events e.g. St James Concert Hall, Guernsey Chamber of Commerce, La Société Guernesiaise.

Whilst the booking process through Eventbrite is relatively simple, we have prepared a simple step by step guide to assist members with the process, which you can download from here - Eventbrite Booking Guide 2025
